Initially, asteroid 2024 YR4 was considered a potential threat to Earth, with a calculated 1-in-32 chance of impact by 2032. However, recent observations have significantly altered this assessment. While the risk to Earth has been virtually eliminated, there’s now a 3.8% chance of the asteroid impacting the Moon. Such an event would be observable from Earth but is not expected to affect the Moon’s orbit or pose any danger to our planet. Further studies have revealed that 2024 YR4 has a unique, flat, disk-like shape, resembling a spinning hockey puck, and measures approximately 200 feet (60 meters) across. It rotates every 20 minutes and is rich in silicates. These findings provide valuable insights into asteroid compositions and behaviors, aiding future planetary defense strategies.
